Three Wise Monkeys Porcelain Limoges Box

Three monkeys sit shoulder to shoulder, one covering its eyes, one its ears and one its mouth, acting out the old proverb in porcelain. It is a hand-painted porcelain Limoges box made in Limoges, France, a classic subject with a message as fresh as ever.

See No, Hear No, Speak No

The three wise monkeys have carried their lesson across centuries and cultures, reminding us to turn away from gossip and unkind words. Here the trio makes a lighthearted conversation piece that still has something to say. Guests tend to pick it up and smile at the familiar poses.

Kilns Above the Vienne

Limoges porcelain is hard-paste porcelain, fired at very high heat, and the painting on boxes like this one is often added by hand after that firing. Lawyers, teachers, counselors and human resources staff often enjoy the message, and it makes a witty retirement or new office present for anyone who values discretion.
